My Temper Tantrum

Why does my school district feel the need to torture us? Why must we go the extra two days of school from excessive snow days when we've already met our state required seat hours? I have two weeks of school left. Take a look at the weather for this week in my zip code (45420) at weather.com. Yeah. You see it. 90 freaking degrees. Most likely with humidity.
I work in a buidling that was erected in 1922. Do you think that comes with central air???? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! This weather just makes me want to cry! My summer vacation feels so far away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thirteen Things Flying Through My Head Right NOW!
1. I have to buy more milk.
2. I want to read the Gossip Girl book series incase the TV show is really cool this fall because of my FAV girl Kristen Bell.
3. We have to decide if we want to close two days sooner on our new digs. Just got the offer from our realtor to do that.
4. I hope it's not raining when we move Sarah on Saturday!
5. I can't wait to get my hair colored and cut this weekend!
6. It's way too freaking hot for school, it needed to be over like a week ago.
7. I don't want school to be over yet though! I love these kids!
8. Got another email from a mom who says her kid loves me and I've influenced who he has become this year....makes my heart hurt to think they're leaving.
9. I want to go to Gap today and buy some white t-shirts. They're so versatile!
10. I have to start packing the things I don't want to the movers to see, like my naughty underwear! LOL!
11. I hope they call about the inspections for our house on Crieghton soon. I want to know if there are any problems that need to be fixed.

Quick Story
So I got a new bank card because we signed up for Points from National City. We get 50,000 points just for signing a new mortgage with them, and their rewards are actually pretty reasonable. So I figured, why not? I'll sign up. We've earned 25,000 in the last two months just using our cards every day. So anyways....I got the new card. And I was all upset because it had a new number on the front. I've memorized my old number. I was worried I wouldn't be able to remember the new one.
I was relieved to see the first two sets of digits hadn't changed. The third set of digits? 1320! LOL! Guess I won't have any problems after all....

Second Half of the Weekend Recap
I could post about my entire weekend, but since most of you were part of it, that seems pointless, especially since you all already wrote about it! So I'll start with Saturday night....
Saturday night Kendall and I went to this really fancy charity dinner. It was $150 a plate (we didn't have to pay for it) and every woman there was in a ball gown. I was underdressed in a calf length beaded black dress. I thought I looked pretty fancy until I saw a lady walk by in black satin gloves. Okay, so she was a little overdressed, but seriously, it was ridiculous how dressed up people were. The thing that really bothered me about it was that I had definitely seen some of those dresses in the Juniors section when I had gone out shopping for my own dress. Some of these women were in their 40s. That must sound terrible of me...but really? I get that many of them were much skinnier than my fat-a$$ 16, but that doesn't give you the fashion excuse to shop in the same section as your 15 year old daughter.
Anyways, I digress....It was an auction as well. Both silent and live. I've never been to a live auction before and it was pretty fun. Way to rich for our blood (at least for a couple of years) but still exciting. We sat and talked about how much we would bid and laughed when people got really into it. One man took home almost half of the 30 items up for bidding. It was very generous on his part, but he also got some really cool stuff. The highest winning bid? $10,000. Yeah, it was cool. Everyone clapped after that one. We danced to one song after the bidding and then headed home.
Sunday morning we went to church and snuck out early to come home and get the dogs out for a 10:30 showing of our house. We went shopping at Sams Club and bought an extra controller for our Wii. We realized on Friday that one just wasn't enough. We had Jessica and Aaron over for lunch to celebrate Aaron's new job...that he found out he got while he was at church! He's going to be taking a one year teaching position at Cedarville University with the understanding that if a long term position opens up, he'll get first dibs at it. Pretty cool. We all played the Wii and made a Jessica and Aaron for the game system. Then we realized our Wii has a wireless card in it so we set it up so that our Wii characters could travel to other people's systems. So Karen, Jim, Sarah, Nicole, Kendall, Jessica, Aaron, and I could essentially end up on Wii systems all over the world! How cool is that?!?! And they'd look like us!
After playing our Wii almost all afternoon (very bad for your health)we got a random phone call at about 6:30 from our realtor. He wanted to know if we would be willing to show the house...in 15 minutes! LOL! The prospective buyer said he didn't even care if the house was dirty. Fortunately it was spic and span clean because of the AM showing. So he showed up and we took the dogs for a walk. On our way back, he was still there so we went over and talked and answered some questions for him. The big news....*drum roll*...
So he made an official offer and we're going to counter, but it looks like we may have sold our house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The craziest part, he wants to move in the week we move. So there will be a relatively smooth transition. We'll actually close in less than a month, and only have to make one last mortgage payment on our current house. Which would make July mortgage free! HOORAY! Keep those good vibes headed our way and I'll keep you posted on the official "sell". I'll make sure to take a picture of the sold sign! HOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thursday Thirteen
Thirteen Comments About Parents/Parenting:
1. I like living away from my parents. And Kendall's parents. I see too many people who live near their parents and they go crazy. Is that bad? Am I abnormal?
2. I sometimes go weeks without talking to my mom on the phone. Mom leaves me IMs. Is that bad? Is there anyone out there that talks to their mom on a weekly basis? Daily?
3. I want to be an independent mom. I watch my two friends named Amy (yes, I know two Amys and two Jessicas...I also know another Lisa!) and they are both very independent moms. I like that. Their kids are more independent because of it. They don't need to constantly be holding their children from them to be happy. They play on their own.
4. Taking your boob out in front of me is not cool. While I get the necessity, it always make me uncomfortable. I try to act like it doesn't. But I really wish you'd use a bottle. Even if you're family. I'm really glad that Karen agrees and promises not to do this.
5. When a daddy cries, be it on TV, in a movie, or in real life, I cry too. I'm a sucker for men crying, especially daddies.
6. Don't lie to me when I call about your kid. I will find out. Your kid will tell me the truth.
7. I secretly buy baby clothes if I think they're cute and on clearance. Sometimes for both genders. I figure that worst case scenario I have to give them to someone else. I know I'm going to have a kid eventually....I'm just prepared ahead of time.
8. My favorite thing at baby showers is the cake. Just like at weddings. I love coffee and cake at a celebration. I hope Karen has a good cake....LOL!
9. I find it annoying when my parents still try to "parent" me. Most of the time I try not to say anything because it's usually not worth it, but sometimes the monster comes out and I have to say something. It usually gets me in trouble.
10. The best part about being a grownup is that I can't really get in trouble. So I can't get grounded. Or spanked. (Unless I want to be spanked...and then Kendall does it. HA! I made you groan out loud!)
11. I told my kids at school about how great it is to be a grownup and not have parents to boss you around. They laughed.
12. I curse in front of my parents. Sometimes at my parents. Does anyone else do this? My parents curse around me, so I figure it's fair game. Kendall's parents don't curse, so we don't curse in front of them. My mom and I got into a fight right before Easter and we both used the "F-bomb". Amy S. and Jessica G-J find that amazing. For me I guess it all goes back to #10. I can't really get in trouble for doing it!

News of the Week
So I'm thinking the whole doggies buying presents thing is a good idea. Maybe I'll try that for next year.
So the big news of the day is that I've started the adoption process through Catholic Social Services (CSS). I've been talking via email with a nice woman and we're in the middle of trying to set up a one on one informational meeting. Their next group meeting isn't until July 11th, and we want to get started sooner than that. We're trying to get something set up for this week or next.
The meeting should lay out all of the paperwork we need to start filling out and how much it will cost us to adopt. This way we'll know what kind of financial obligation we need to plan for over the summer. I'm assuming we can do most of the paperwork for free. I've heard that can take a serious amount of time.
We've decided to go with a domestic adoption, so that means that we'll end up with a newborn. With CSS you create a profile and the birth mother picks you. (Very nerve-wracking from what I've heard.) Once you've been picked, then you start making the arrangements. By the time she gives birth, you've usually signed all of the paperwork and are recognized as the legal parents of the child and get to make all health care decisions.
The pros: You get a newborn, you know the health history of the mother, and you don't have to travel overseas with 10 grand strapped to your body. (Yes, that's what our friends are really doing in their international adoption...essentially bribing public officials to take home a child)
The cons: You get a newborn (haha), there is less anonymity for the adoptive parents, and you run the risk that they'll want to keep their baby. Within 72 hours of birth they can literally decide to just take their baby home with no legal action. We just have to let it happen. The parents also have 6 months after that to take you to court to get their baby back...and they win 99% of the time. BUT the process is complicated and costly for the biological parent and very rarely happens. Our biggest risk comes in that first three days. Scarey.
So we'll see. We're excited and ready. We're not giving up on trying by ourselves, but right now adoption just really feels right. Pro: I don't have to get fat and then worry about getting skinny again and we still get to experience all the sleepless nights and joys and frustration of newborn parenthood. Con: Someday I'd still like to know what being pregnant feels like, and we'd like our own biological child....
Maybe we'll just wait for Karen to be our surrogate if I find I just can't carry one. She seems to be having an easy time of it! HA!

Difficult Day
But I made it. I guess that's all that matters. This is my third Mother's Day since we started trying to have a baby. Which means it's one of the worst reminders of the four times we've lost our own little ones at such at early stage....
I'm trying to focus on our "plan" but this is probably the crappiest day of the year for women who have trouble having a baby. I feel barren. Good thing tomorrow is a personal day.

Thursday Thirteen
Thirteen Books or Series I Could Read Over and Over and WHY:
1. Pride and Prejudice- Intellectually challenging and a GREAT classic romance. Mr. Darcy! Suprisingly, the movie and book seemed pretty equal in my mind. I love them both!
2. Harry Potter Series*- Gripping, lovable, who doesn't wish they could do magic?
3. A Series of Unfortunate Events*- Slightly dark, but once again gripping. You want the Beaudelair children to succeed.
4. The Princess Academy*- Super cute quick read about a little girl who learns how to be very brave when faced with a dangerous situation
5. Gone With the Wind- Yet another classic romance
6. The Things They Carried- A collection of short stories about the Vietnam War. Very graphic, but also heart wrenchingly beautiful relationships between soldiers.
7. Bridget Jones's Diary- a fun read about a crazy Brit
8. Shopaholic Series- If you love shopping and fashion, plus these books are hilarious! The heroine is always getting herself in sticky situations!
9. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Series*- Who doesn't wish they owned a pair of jeans that fit them and three of their friends and ALL of their asses look good in them?!?!
10. Left Behind Series- Loosely based on the Book of Revelation, they're a fascinating read about what might happen at the end of the world
11. The Devil Wears Prada- Better than the movie, just as most books are. But also vastly different- You've been warned.
12. The Nanny Diaries- Once again, probably better than the movie will be. This girl is seriously pushed to the edge working for an Upper East Side Nanny.
13. The Bible- sounds silly, but it's got some really good stories.
Admitedly, 4 of these are young adult lit, but they're too fun to pass up! I've denoted those books with an asterisk after the title incase anyone wants to read any of these and also provided links with the titles.

Tuesday Twelve- Because I CAN!
1. The new house is stressing me out.
2. The sale of the old house is stressing me out.
3. My co-workers are bickering...that's stressing me out.
4. One of my students moved away very suddenly yesterday and I had crying kids on my hands all day long.
5. Holy Hot Weather Batman!
6. We have rivaling ice cream trucks in our neighborhood.
7. My nose is really dry inside and I keep getting bloody noses, but I refuse to stick vasiline up there. It sounds too gross.
8. Speaking of gross, did you hear about the kid with two spiders in his ear? One got flushed out still alive!!!!!!
9. I miss Karen. She said something very nice about me in her blog and I feel like I've been a jerk friend. I never call. I'm sorry! =(
10. I bought 40 books for 20 dollars at the library sale.

This is Why I Love my Dogs
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A plucky Jack Russell terrier named George saved five children from two marauding pit bulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight that it had to be put down, its owner said Wednesday. George was playing with the group of children as they returned home from buying sweets at a neighborhood shop in the small North Island town of Manaia last Sunday when the two pit bulls appeared and lunged toward them, Allan Gay said.
"George was brave -- he took them on and he's not even a foot high," Gay told The Associated Press. "He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.
"If it wasn't for George, those kids would have copped it."
One of the children, Richard Rosewarne, 11, was quoted in the Taranaki Daily News on Wednesday as saying George fought with the pit bulls to keep them off his 4-year-old brother, Darryl.
"George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him -- one on the head and the other on the back," Rosewarne said. "We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George."
But George was so badly mauled that a veterinarian had to put him down, Gay said.
South Taranaki District Council official Graham Young said the two pit bulls had been impounded, and likely would be put down because of the attack.
In New Zealand, owners of dogs judged to be too aggressive can be required to have them neutered and dogs involved in attacks are destroyed.
