Stupid Boss and Stupid Evaluation

So my boss gave me my culminating evaluation for the year...which is total crap to begin with because he doesn't really understand the model he grades me under. The last time, he had given me a "Basic" (which means needs some basic improvement) in a category that made no sense based on the comments he also wrote. So I told him he was wrong and if he was going to nail me for anything it fit under a different category. So he said "My bad" and fixed it. He didn't even attempt to hide that he was wrong! This concerned me considering this evaluation goes in my permanent file at the board office and other people can read it.

So when I looked over my final eval, which should just be a summary of the whole school year and my previous three evaluations, he has marked something as Basic that he's never marked that way before. He then proceeds to make a comment based on it. So I go back to my three evals and two of them are marked as Proficient (which means that I'm doing fine) and one of them is marked as Distinguished (which means I'm going above and beyond)! So I'm like, "What the hell is this all about?" I think he's just grasping at straws looking for something to put as a suggestion. The problem is, the one he marked would indicate that I don't care enough about the kids and that I'm not fair with them. Now that's what makes me really angry. I totally think I'm fair, and why would I be a teacher if I didn't care about kids? There are so many other jobs I could be doing that would pay MUCH better money.

I'm so irritated that I wanted to walk down to his office and be like, "What the crap?" But I've been trying to maintain a calm and detached air to the situation. I can't go in and tell him he's a moron, but I do plan on going in and asking him to clarify why he would suddenly drop my "grade" without warning.

This also led me to start thinking in the car, that maybe I should be in law school, because I certainly love to argue and to prove people wrong. And fight injustices. Grrrr.....

That is crap. This guy is as bad as my dumb sales professor in his inability to grade people correctly. Especially based on your past good performance in that area i think you should go to HIS boss to complain.

Reverse critiques are necessary!

Hmmm... Karen's suggestion isn't bad. At the very least, however, you should ask him about it and at least get it changed...

Before you go to his boss, I would talk to your school's Union representative. If you feel you have been evaluated unfairly and without good evidence, they're the ones who will know what channels to take. I'd speak off the record first though...just look for some advice..you don't want to start a union v. principal thing when you are still new in the district...if you don't have to. Yuck!

This is sticky. I agree with all those previous comments, especially Anne's. Good luck getting this resolved, and you should!

Boss' suck! I totally support you going to law school... if I ever get caught breaking the law I'm going to be calling you to defend me! I can see you telling the judge to shut up and listen! LOL.

Well, I'm the union rep for my building...and he's not really violating any union policy, this is more a matter of whether or not he really understands the Praxis model...which MIGHT be the only thing that violates our contract, since that's the agreed upon model for evaluations. I'm going to sit down with him first and then go from there.
